Every year the suppliers for Whole School Meals, Q Catering, hold a Christmas car competition. Over 40 schools entered. We are delighted to announce there were 3 winners from Hornbeam, with fantastic artwork. Not only have they won a prize for themselves but also a prize for the school.

Today we had a very special guest; The Mayor of Deal, who officially opened our new ICT suite. The children have been very excited this term and have been given lots of opportunities to use their ICT skills. The suite has a workstation for each child with individual screens and keyboards. This has allowed for the curriculum to be taught at a higher standard and will pave the way for a future filled with important computing skills.

On Tuesday 8th October, Year 5 took part in an art and Geography workshop. The workshop consists of a presentation about plastics and sustainability which touches on healthy eating, a Q&A, and an activity where pupils get the opportunity to create their own mosaics on green cloths.

As part of the Year 6 leavers events the children were invited to go to the Kent Police Open Day in Maidstone. Activities included a gaming bus, dog show, police tactics for arrest, prison vans and they even spent time in custody cell. the day was enjoyed by all.

Betteshanger Story Writing - April 2024 8th Apr 2024

A group of year 6 children attended a writing workshop day at Betteshanger Country Park, they were tasked with producing a story about mouse who lived in a mine, the story was then turned into a book with stories from children in schools in Deal. The book also includes original illustrations by an artist and illustrations by the children. The children were presented with a copy for the school in a special assembly and told that their story had been voted for as the best by the illustrator himself. He gifted the school a signed illustration which includes a hornbeam tree.

Year 6 have enjoyed a full day of RE activities, The morning was spent in school investigating the Easter story, symbols and Christianity. Followed by an exciting afternoon at St Nicholas Church who organised a variety of craft activities which the children thoroughly enjoyed.

Year R went to visit the RNLI station on Friday 8th March. Jenny and Nic, volunteers and part of the Lifeboat crew told us lots of information about how they keep people safe in the water. We saw the lifeboat and looked at what they have to wear.

All the children enjoyed World Book Day today. The costumes were fantastic. There was also a wooden spoon competition and a winner from each class was selected as well as a KS1 and KS2 overall winner.

The coin trail was a huge success. The children made a trail in the hall measuring a whopping 57 metres in length! The coins were counted by Year 6 and we raised £430 for the school.

The children were visited by volunteers from the RNLI and coastguard to learn about water safety and the incredible work carried out by these local volunteers. Every class had a workshop, special assembly and a chance to meet the crew and see some of the kit and equipment used.

Year 6 enjoyed a fantastic day at Betteshanger Mining Museum. They got a private tour of the museum where they were able to dress up as miners, they handled mining artefacts, experienced what it would have been like in a mine lift cage and mine tunnel, thought about pride and unity by creating banners and travelled as a miner would have as they migrated to Deal. The highlight of the day was the talk from the 2 Jims who worked at Betteshanger Colliery.

Coronation Picnic - May 2023 5th May 2023

A celebration picnic was enjoyed by all at Hornbeam Primary School to mark the King's Coronation. The children all made crowns to wear to the occasion and we were delighted to have the sun come out and join them. To add to the fun parent volunteers supported the school by creating the 'Head in the hole' artwork. This has helped the children create wonderful memories. A fabulous afternoon to be treasured.
