Year 5 - CATs Testing
On Monday 9th February children in Year 5 will be taking their CATS tests.
WHAT ARE COGNITIVE ABILITY TESTS (CATS)?
CATs are marked tests which assess your child’s general intelligence. They differ from SATs in that they test ability rather than knowledge. The results are used as a benchmark of your child’s overall intelligence, abilities and potential.
The results should also help the school spot any issues and identify where your child might need some support and will be a good indicator of how your child might cope at a grammar school.
WHAT DO CATS ASSESS?
There are four main areas which are assessed:
-
Verbal Reasoning – Thinking and problem solving with words
-
Non-Verbal Reasoning – Thinking and problem solving with shapes and space
-
Quantitative Reasoning – Thinking and problem solving with numbers
-
Spatial Reasoning – Visualising, picturing and moving shapes around
The tests will be delivered in the morning of that day and children will have regular breaks.
These tests are non statutory, but provide the school and parents with valuable assessments and information on learning profiles.
The class teacher will speak to you directly should they not be appropriate for your child, but most will be given the opportunity to do the tests on the Monday.
Unfortunately, if children are absent on Monday we will not be able to facilitate the tests at another point.
Please aim to arrive promptly on that Monday, gates open at 8.27.
Should you have any questions please speak to a member of the team.
