A celebration picnic was enjoyed by all at Hornbeam Primary School to mark the King's Coronation. The children all made crowns to wear to the occasion and we were delighted to have the sun come out and join them. To add to the fun parent volunteers supported the school by creating the 'Head in the hole' artwork. This has helped the children create wonderful memories. A fabulous afternoon to be treasured.

Year 6 enjoyed a fantastic day at Betteshanger Mining Museum. They got a private tour of the museum where they were able to dress up as miners, they handled mining artefacts, experienced what it would have been like in a mine lift cage and mine tunnel, thought about pride and unity by creating banners and travelled as a miner would have as they migrated to Deal. The highlight of the day was the talk from the 2 Jims who worked at Betteshanger Colliery.

The children were visited by volunteers from the RNLI and coastguard to learn about water safety and the incredible work carried out by these local volunteers. Every class had a workshop, special assembly and a chance to meet the crew and see some of the kit and equipment used.

Year 6 were lucky enough to complete Restart a Heart training. They learned about healthy hearts and how to help in an emergency. They practised putting someone in the recovery position and how to do basic CPR.

The coin trail was a huge success. The children made a trail in the hall measuring a whopping 57 metres in length! The coins were counted by Year 6 and we raised £430 for the school.

The school welcomed Open View Education today to deliver a workshop around bullying awareness and kindness. Children in Years R, 1,2,3 & 4 watched a performance and the older classes took part in a workshop.

Walmer Lifeboat and RNLI station - Year R - 2024 8th Mar 2024

Year R went to visit the RNLI station on Friday 8th March. Jenny and Nic, volunteers and part of the Lifeboat crew told us lots of information about how they keep people safe in the water. We saw the lifeboat and looked at what they have to wear.

As part of the Year 6 leavers events the children were invited to go to the Kent Police Open Day in Maidstone. Activities included a gaming bus, dog show, police tactics for arrest, prison vans and they even spent time in custody cell. the day was enjoyed by all.

A group of year 6 children attended a writing workshop day at Betteshanger Country Park, they were tasked with producing a story about mouse who lived in a mine, the story was then turned into a book with stories from children in schools in Deal. The book also includes original illustrations by an artist and illustrations by the children. The children were presented with a copy for the school in a special assembly and told that their story had been voted for as the best by the illustrator himself. He gifted the school a signed illustration which includes a hornbeam tree.

On Tuesday 8th October, Year 5 took part in an art and Geography workshop. The workshop consists of a presentation about plastics and sustainability which touches on healthy eating, a Q&A, and an activity where pupils get the opportunity to create their own mosaics on green cloths.

Today we had a very special guest; The Mayor of Deal, who officially opened our new ICT suite. The children have been very excited this term and have been given lots of opportunities to use their ICT skills. The suite has a workstation for each child with individual screens and keyboards. This has allowed for the curriculum to be taught at a higher standard and will pave the way for a future filled with important computing skills.

In Year R the children have been celebrating Chinese New Year.  We have had a dress up day themed on the animals from the Chinese Zodiac, found where China is on a map, explored using chop sticks to pick up rice and created our own Chinese lanterns and dragons. During PE we took part in a dragon dance and then we had our very own Chinese food tasting!

On Wednesday 5th March Year 2 took a trip to Walmer Castle. As part of their topic this term they were learning about The Duke oF Wellington. They went into the castle and discovered the life of the Duke, looked at portraits and importnat artefacts. Then went into the gardens to look at different tyes of flowers and plants that grew there. Fun day had by all. .

Year 5 and 6 had an exciting workshop led by the RAF, the focus was on STEM (Science, technology, engineering and maths). The children had to write an algorithm for a robot to allow it to move along a path.

We took a group of Year 6 and Year 5 children to the Royal British Legion Act of Remembrance at the Hamilton Road Cemetery, where they laid a wreath which represented Hornbeam School.

For outdoor learning day Year 2 went outside to look more closely at our Hornbeam tree. We then sketched our own versions of the tree in the style of Vincent Van Gogh. In Science the children were discussing what animals need to survive. We agreed that animals need water, air, food and shelter. The children then created their own animal shelters in Forest school.

Deal and Betteshanger Rugby Club hosted a Rugby Day on the field at Hornbeam. The child had a wonderful day learning all about teamwork and important skills needed to enjoy the game of Rugby.

The woodland area was transformed to create a festive walk for the children. The classes searched for clues to find the mystery word hidden in the scenes. The children enjoyed exploring and spotting things in the woodland and connected with the outside space for this activity.

Holcaust Memorial Day - January 2026 27th Jan 2026

Some of the School Council braved the wet weather and attended a ceremony at George’s Church for Holocaust Memorial Day. The Memorial Day is held on Tuesday 27th January, as this is the anniversary of the liberation of the largest Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau. It is a day to reflect, remember and learn vital lessons from the past. This year’s theme was, ‘Bridging the Generations’. The school council worked with Mrs Goodey and read a poem called, ‘Never Shall I forget’. The message that the children took from this poem was that when bad things happen, the worst thing anyone can do, is to do nothing. The children wrote some thoughtful poems and created charcoal images of ways that they would remember what happened in the past. Most importantly they also thought about using their voice for good in the future to speak out, voice concerns and create a better, safer world. The children were a credit to the school and represented Hornbeam in a very respectful way.

Year R had a special visit from the Fire Brigade today. They were able to sit inside the fire engine, listen to the siren, use the water hose and look at some of the specialist equipment onboard. They thoroughly enjoyed it.
